The 44 women interviewed in this book explain how their gynecological surgeries have had lasting effects on them-even though their conditions were benign. Acknowledging that the removal of the ovaries or the uterus made them feel less female/feminine, these women also stated that social factors in addition to the support-or rejection-of their partner also contributed to their emotional responses. The women ultimately sought to reclaim their gender identities and understand it in a biological, social, and cultural context.
