Der 1759 in Hannover geborene August Wilhelm Iffland begann seine theatralische Laufbahn 1777 am Gothaer Hoftheater, einem der ltesten barocken Kulissentheater Deutschlands, das von Conrad Ekhof geleitet wurde. 1782 spielte er in Mannheim als erster die Rolle des Franz Moor in Schillers Erstlingswerk "Die R uber". Von 1796 bis 1814 war Iffland Direktor des Berliner Nationaltheaters, das unter seiner Leitung zu einem Mittelpunkt der Berliner Stadtkultur wurde. Von den seit 1802 erschienenen 175 Radierungen der "Kost me auf dem K niglichen National-Theater in Berlin" werden in dem Band 80 auf Farbtafeln reproduziert. Sie bilden eine Suite von Darstellungen, die uns die Inszenierungen des Iffland-Theaters nahe bringt. Sie visualisieren Ifflands Schauspiel- und Kost mkunst sowie das Repertoire, das sich sowohl an ein literarisch gebildetes als auch an ein Vergn gen und Unterhaltung suchendes Publikum wandte. Die handkolorierten Kost mfigurinen sind Teil der Selbstinszenierung des Bildungsb rgers im Berliner Nationaltheater. Die Beitr ge von Jens Bisky, Klaus Gerlach, Uta Motschmann, Claudia Sedlarz, Ren Sternke und Conrad Wiedemann gehen von den Bildern der ber 60 Inszenierungen aus und w rdigen Ifflands Schaffen als Schauspieler, B hnenautor und Intendant.
