Roger Bowler, aged twenty-one and from Oxford is a navigator on a Lancaster Bomber in WW2. He is sent to America to train as a pilot. Whilst there, he needs an operation. At the hospital, he meets Belinda, an eighteen-year-old nurse-aid. He jilts his English fiancee, Susan and marries Belinda.
