D'origine métisse, Riel naît dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l'actuel Manitoba. Aîné d'une famille de onze enfants, il quitte la maison à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal. De retour chez lui, dix ans plus tard, il vit un choc culturel intense, aggravé par une famine sans précédent qui décime les siens. Par son charisme et son éducation, Riel s'impose rapidement comme leader et s'engage dans la défense des droits des Métis. Il forme alors un gouvernement provisoire qui siège à Fort Garry, mais le gouvernement canadien se moque de leurs revendications. Malgré tout, Riel réussit, non sans mal, à faire valoir leurs droits. Le 9 mai 1870, Ottawa consent à la création d'une nouvelle province, le Manitoba. Quinze ans plus tard, les Métis de la Saskatchewan viennent lui demander son aide. Il accepte de les aider. Trois rudes batailles s'ensuivent. Après la défaite de Batoche, Louis Riel se rend aux autorités.
