This work offers the first comprehensive formulation for theprediction of the energy levels of many-electron atomicsystems within the framework of a configuration interactiontreatment, with consideration of the most importantrelativistic corrections as well as the interaction withexternal electric and magnetic fields. The formulation isdevelopedusing tensor-algebra techniques, which arediscussed in detail and illustrated in the transformation ofoperators to tensor form and the formulation of thecorresponding matrix elements. In addition to its didactic value, this work has practicalapplications. The reader will be able to proceed to thestudy, both theoretical and computational, of additionalcorrections. The discussion of computational details (on theselection of configurations and the determination of theradial functions) and of representative calculationsillustrates both the practicaldifficulties and the qualityof the results. | Research in Atomic Structure by S.
