The United States of America played a significant role in the Middle East during the second part of the Twentieth century. The United States has used its power to safeguard its national interests in the Middle East. The results of U. S. foreign policy in the Middle East have varied, and created new friends and foes. This is inherent in the contradictory interest the United States pursuing in the region. This thesis will address the period in the wake of the Cold War. In this period United States faced a changing strategic reality; a Middle East without the vanishing Soviet Union's influence. United States has pursued a number of national interests during the last decade of the Twentieth century, some more vital than others. The purpose of this thesis is to examine if post Cold War United States foreign policy efforts in the Middle East has served the United States national interests.
